Essential fruit oils are some of the most popular natural supplements on the market today. The reason for this is simple: they are good for you. They are also affordable, especially the essential oils of citrus fruits. As you may know, the US has an enormous citrus industry, which is why these oils are so cheap.

What is an essential oil? Certain fruits like oranges and grapefruit have large amounts of oils in their rinds. These oils can be extracted mechanically by a process called cold compression. They can then be used as a supplement in beverages or during aromatherapy or message sessions. Essential oils of citrus fruits are also a popular ingredient in skin creams, soaps, and shampoos. What do they do?

When used as a supplement, essential oils do have nutritional benefits. When used as an ingredient in a skin or hair care product, essential oils are said to be invigorating. This is because citrus fruits contain high levels of ascorbic acid, which makes the skin and the scalp tingle a bit and feel refreshed. Essential fruit oils like lemon and lime also have an appealing and refreshing scent. But our favorite essential oil comes from the grapefruit.

Why grapefruit? All essential oils from citrus fruits are salubrious, but the grapefruit may just be the healthiest. Not to mention the fact that it is dirt cheap. As the world leader in grapefruit production, the US has more than enough grapefruit rinds to go around. Most of these skins are procured from processing plants that make grapefruit juice. But instead of simply dumping them in some landfill somewhere, they are used to make healthy essential oils.

Now, it is important to note that consuming essential fruit oils is not nearly as good for you as actually eating fresh fruit. Fresh fruit contains dietary fiber, which has been shown to improve digestive health and may even reduce the risk of heart disease and certain types of cancer. Because it does not contain pulp or skin, grapefruit essential oil does not offer any dietary fiber. However, it is chockfull of healthy vitamins and minerals. It is also fat and cholesterol free.

Most people who purchase grapefruit essential oil do so because they can no longer consume fresh citrus fruits, often due to the acidity. Mixing a few drops of the supplement into a warm drink gives them the nutrients they used to get when they would eat grapefruit.

The most obvious reason to buy grapefruit essential oil is for the extra vitamin C. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that protects healthy cells from harmful free radicals. Free radicals are nasty little molecules that may increase the risk of certain types of cancer. Studies have also shown that high levels of vitamin C can buoy the immune system and prevent colds and minor illnesses.
