Diet Review: The Grapefruit Juice Diet

Let's play a quick word association game. When we say the word “grapefruit,” what do you think of? Odds are words like “breakfast,” “diet,” and “weight loss” sprang immediately to mind. But why do almost all of us think of the grapefruit as a diet food that is often consumed in the early morning hours? The answer? Because of the Grapefruit Diet!

Also known as the Hollywood Diet, this popular fad diet was introduced way back in 1930. At the time, the grapefruit was an exotic fruit that had never quite caught on with the American public. Most considered it too sour to be enjoyed on a regular basis, not to mention the fact that it could not be consumed as a hand fruit like the apple or orange. But when it was revealed that the grapefruit was the diet secret of the stars, those limitations were overlooked.

The Diet

The Grapefruit Juice Diet plan is considered a crash or fad diet because it promises quick results in a short period of time. According to most modern versions, users can lose up to 10 lbs. in only 12 days! Is this possible? Yes, but probably not for the stated reasons.

You see, when the plan was first introduced, the creators played on the public's ignorance of grapefruits. They claimed that the exotic, little-known fruit actually had a secret fat-burning enzyme. This enzyme could be used to magically melt pounds away, no matter what you ate. As you might expect, this claim is completely and entirely unfounded. There is no magic enzyme that reduces your waistline without effort or sacrifice. With that said, the grapefruit is one of the healthiest edibles on Earth.

Why it Works

In spite of the fact that there is absolutely no scientific evidence that the grapefruit helps us burn fat, it may actually curb our appetite. Several studies have found that drinking or eating grapefruit before a major meal forces us to eat a bit less. We don't know why this is, but it seems to be the case.

Fruit or juice?

While it is true that fresh grapefruit contains more fiber, vitamins, and nutrients than its juice, fresh grapefruit isn't always available. If you do not reside in a citrus-producing state, it can be difficult to find it at your local supermarket. Bottled juice is the next best thing and can be used in place of fresh fruit for the Grapefruit Juice Diet plan.

It is also possible to squeeze your own fresh juice if you don't like grapefruit in its natural form. This fresh-squeezed juice is actually much better for you than the bottled variety, since it often contains at least some dietary fiber and has no added sugar.
