Grapefruit is one of the healthiest fruits on earth. The only problem is that is can sometimes be difficult to get your hands on a fresh one. Since the fruit is only produced commercially in four states–Florida, Texas, California and Arizona–the online option is a viable one.
Buying online grapefruit? We know, it sounds a bit batty. But the truth is that online fruit sellers are extremely popular on the internet. The reason for this is simple–online grapefruit baskets and trays are much cheaper than those purchased at retail stores.
They are also more convenient. All you have to do is visit a reputable site, select an item and enter your credit card information. Baskets and trays are often sent that very day and may arrive within twenty-four hours. How is this possible?
Well, most of the companies that sell fruit online do not actually own regular retail stores. That means they don't have to pay for rent, heat, electricity or many employees. They can save massive amounts of cash on these traditional expenditures and pass them on to consumers.
Yes, in a nutshell, that is why online commerce is on the rise and has been since the advent of the internet…it is much, much cheaper. But sending online grapefruit takes more than just a reliable delivery company and a few employees. First and most importantly, it takes fresh fruit.
That is why almost all fruit distribution companies are located in one of the four aforementioned states. As you might expect, they have to ensure that their product will arrive in about a day, two at the most. After two days, citrus fruits like oranges, tangerines and grapefruits, no matter how fresh may begin to go bad. More often than not, the fruit will become bruised and soft spots will ruin the texture and consistency.
Whether sent in a basket or tray, online grapefruit can only be purchased between November and May. If a company attempts to sell you fruit out of season, it is probably a good idea to move along. If you want to send a citrus fruit basket or gift tray outside of grapefruit season you can choose another type of citrus fruit gift that is in season to send.
It is also important to remember that the grapefruit is a very mercurial fruit and significant price fluctuations are not at all uncommon. This has to do with the fact that grapefruits are only grown in four states and that they can only survive in sub tropical environments. For example, Texas is one of the biggest grapefruit producers in the nation. They are responsible for about 20 percent of the US supply. As the second largest state in the U.S., Texas has over 170 million acres, but only about 20 thousand of them are good for growing grapefruits. That's about .0001 percent of the land in Texas.
