The essential oils of citrus fruits have been used for decades as a natural health supplement. Since there is a large supply, the oils of these fruits are much cheaper than other essential oils. Citrus fruit rinds also contain large quantities of oil that can easily be extracted by cold compression. But which citrus-fruit oil should you buy? Today we are going to take a look at grapefruit essential oil.
The grapefruit is the youngest member of the citrus fruit family. First documented on the island of Barbados in 1750, it is a hybrid fruit, a cross between a Jamaican sweet orange and an Indonesian pomelo.
The exotic subtropical fruit arrived to America in 1823, where it finally experienced success as a breakfast and diet fad food in the early 20th century. Today, the United States is the largest producer of grapefruits on earth with over one and a half million tons shipped each year.
With all that fruit it's easy to understand why grapefruit essential oil is so affordable. But why should you buy grapefruit oil? For starters, the grapefruit is one of the healthiest fruits in the world. It is chockfull of vitamins and minerals. It has no fat, no cholesterol and it is high in antioxidants.
Of course, there is a difference between actually eating a grapefruit and mixing a few drops of essential oil into your drink. Just like grapefruit juice, essential oils do not contain any fiber. Fiber can only be found in the flesh and the walls of the grapefruit, not in the rind.
But there are still many good reasons to buy grapefruit essential oil. The first and most obvious one is for the vitamin C, which is a powerful antioxidant. An antioxidant is a molecule that wages war against harmful free radicals that can damage healthy cells. Many medical professionals believe that free radicals may in fact cause cancer. Some even believe that damage to healthy cells may expedite the aging process.
Grapefruit essential oil is also a natural diuretic that promotes urination. As you may know, urination helps cleanse the body and removes harmful toxins like uric acid, excess sodium and fat. Studies also suggest that diuretics can help control cholesterol and high blood pressure, probably because they remove sodium and fat from the body.
Many people who buy grapefruit essential oils also use it as a beauty aid. As a topical solution, grapefruit oils may be effective at fighting acne and balancing the skin. Some people even use it as a hair tonic because they believe it stimulates the follicles and keeps hair looking healthy, shinny and strong.
